Case study - Creating Substance & Sizzle

Creating Substance & Sizzle to ensure Learning Sticks
A workout especially for trainers

"it's a 'must do' workshop and time well spent from both a personal and team perspective"

Background

This workout was designed for the UKs leading bakery retailer and their training teams in the South East division. The organisation already invests in training and developing their people to enable them to work towards the attainment of world class standards.

The specific company rationale for introducing workouts for trainers was to:

  • Raise the skills levels of trainers to be confident to make the shift from instructor to facilitator.
  • Deliver more interactive training programmes where the learning is centred around the participants.

We agreed with our client that the workout would model the desired skills and conditions that make learning effective. This gives the trainers a reference point against which to measure their own development and achievement.

A 2 day workout was planned and run locally, with a variety of materials to support and maintain the learning, both before, during and after the workout itself.

The Workout

The core elements covered:

  • How do we learn best? Exploding myths about learning; the roles of learner v trainer; the difference that makes the difference.
  • Preparation key for both learner and trainer; how to squeeze more into less time.
  • Brain friendly facts how the brain learns and what this means in practice.
  • Memory aids and facilitation strategies to influence memory and keep recall high.
  • The Learning Cycle a simple model for designing and delivering training to ensure learning is relevant, active and complete.
  • Learning Styles how to engage all our trainees all of the time.
  • Reviewing learning creative ways to keep recall high and to make learning stick beyond the training room.

Outcomes & Benefits

The average score for how trainers rated the workout overall was 4.5 out of a possible 5.
