Why coaching?
1:1 coaching is probably the most effective tool on offer to develop our thinking and release more of our potential. |
|
- Coaching reflects the changing nature of organisations
In the new millennium the job market is constantly shifting. It is now more commonplace for people to move from one organisation to another; change profession or industry; become self-employed. As we move through such uncharted waters we recognise the need to take responsibility for our own learning; to become more self sufficient and invest in our personal development.
Many companies are constantly under pressure to reduce costs and to get more from less. We are all expected to work more flexibly and efficiently. The capabilities required to deal with the dynamic nature of work are varied and can include interpersonal skills, communication skills, goal setting, problem solving and creative thinking to name but a few.
More managers are realising that to create a positive and effective working environment they need to develop good leadership skills so they can coach their teams. As a manager, you are required to observe, to listen, to encourage, to inspire, to appreciate, to ask questions and to constructively challenge limiting assumptions.
Coaching makes the best use of internal resources
Coaching is a highly effective, flexible and accessible learning tool which will suit some people's learning style more than traditional methods of group training courses. It can be especially valuable for those of us who work at a distance from the office or work shifts.
Usually, the wealth of expertise that an organisation requires lies dormant within the workforce. When done in a Thinking Environment, coaching awakens this expertise and uniquely stretches our thinking beyond what we currently believe is possible.
Coaching, mentoring, job shadowing and action learning sets are ways in which organisations can accelerate the development of a leadership culture and create an environment where learning is valued and respected as a lifelong process.
The key obstacles in our lives emerge from the key obstacles in our thinking. Good coaching can help us identify how our thinking is limiting our work and our lives and keeping us stuck. In turn we become more self-aware of our development needs and vulnerabilities and find our own solutions to greater confidence and success.
